- Pass the entrance exams
To enter a US university, you will need to pass standardized tests: English language proficiency and the SAT / ACT test – an analogue of final exams for our schoolchildren. You may be exempt from these exams, depending on your entry route. SAT equal to 1600 is the maximum possible score. You may lose your chance to pass the first stage of academic selection if your scores are below 1400. It is advisable to pass the ACT exam with a score of at least 31 out of 36 possible.
Ukrainian students should remember their level of English proficiency, as this is one of the most important point. To be admitted to all US universities without exception, including the Ivy League, a student must pass the IELTS test (with a minimum score of 7.0) or TOEFL (with a minimum score of 105).
The certificate of complete general secondary education of a school in Ukraine is inferior to the American high school program. Students in US schools who want to attend Ivy League universities take additional AP courses. The International Baccalaureate program will significantly increase your chances of admission.
- Prepare documents for admission
Create a resume and write a motivation letter or essay on a given topic. Educational institutions select students for unique interests and talents; this is the main principle on which admission to Ivy League and other selective universities is based. The admissions committee must be confident that students will be successful in the future and thus enhance the prestige of the university where they received their higher education.
- Create a portfolio of your work
For creative specialties, in such fields as cinematography, design or music, the university may additionally request your work, properly framed.
Complete documents about your level of education and submit an application to the university through an agent.
The list of documents from the school or university will differ depending on the time of admission. You will have a better chance of not only getting a place, but also qualifying for more discounts (if any are available) if you apply to the university as early as possible. For Ivy League Universities there are 2 application deadlines: Early decision (before November 1st) and Regular Decision (before January 1st).
- Applying for financial assistance.
Anyone can receive financial assistance. You need to collect a package of documents to submit your application:
certificates from the tax authorities and place of work for the last 2 years from each parent;
certificate of income of a retier, if there is one in the family;
completed special form about property, profit.
This step can be skipped if the candidate plans to pay for the studies themselves
- Interview
The candidate is being prepared for an interview from the moment the application form is submitted. Not all universities conduct entrance interviews.
- Pay the deposit
You will need to confirm your place in the program after receiving your acceptance letter. Depending on the conditions of the university, you need to pay part of the tuition, the so-called deposit, which can be up to $800. By doing this, you let the university know that you really plan to study there.
- Confirm your paying capacity
Studying in the USA is paid for everyone; you must prove that you or your sponsors have money for your studies. You will need to provide the university with a certificate from your bank with the amount fixed by the university.
- Receive an official university acceptance letter
You will receive a final admission letter and further instructions after completing all university requirements. The letter will include a Form I-20 for your visa application.
- Receive visa documents from the university
The application process is quite complex and important, but the most important part of the admission process is obtaining a visa. Having received all the necessary documents, you will need to fill out forms on the US Embassy website and pass an interview. You are officially a student at an American university after receiving a positive response on your visa.
